Precedent:Temp Live|Work housing from the '50's, still in use

This modular design was intended as temp housing for the construction workers during the development of UMass-Amherst.  More than fifty years later, Puffton Village is still in use as  one of the primary off-campus housing locations for students.

This project is innovative in that the University hired a trailer company to establish an affordable modular system.  While these units would be considered inefficient by todays standards, their organizational system is still relevant today.

By attempting to reimagine a more efficient, resourceful living space today, such modular proportions are important to consider.

Living in the Diamond Age: What does Home mean today?

Ever since the Industrial Revolution, technological advancements have perpetuated exponentially. (Ray Kurzweil) If you put things into perspective, our day-to-day could be perceived as something out of a science fiction novel.  The invention of computers has redefined what it means to be human.
Time has become a commodity, daily events which may have been commonplace twenty years ago, can largely be categorized as tedium.  The landline has already been replaced by the Cellphone as the primary phone line and high-speed internet is now considered a utility.
While technology has continually innovated architecture and contruction techniques, how has it changed our preception of the Home?   Innovative products offer ways of updating existing standards, but by-and-large, these products only the appeal to those with expendable income.  In effect, the Diamond age has changed the way we live while our definition of home follows an incongruous path

We live longer and can do more, how can we use tech to redefine our standard for living?

The Primitive Hut -  What is it that ensures a sense of security of home?

Technology has reinforced our ability to innovate, how can the home be reimagined to follow the pace of this Diamond Age?

WORK | evolve | LIVE

Through all my studies, these are ideas I've been thinking about for our site

This Project is a good example of how innovative the dutch have been with housing.  Field of Sounds is a housing community designed specifically for musicians.  I chose this project because the urban layout is a fairly literal interpretation of the Dutch concept for co-housing.

By controlling the way in which people circulate through the space, areas adopt functions for use.  At the center, a common house becomes the heart of the community, in this case, individual practice spaces and a main performance area.   Perhaps the most innovative factor within this project is that the common space is inserted below the ground.  Not only does this open up the center of the neighborhood with park space, but insulate the community from the noises within.

I wish I had seen this sooner!  This firm specializes in co-housing and community housing.  A lot of what they do involves rethinking the ways in which we live.  Their work offers really great precedents to look at and they are huge advocates of the co-housing philosophy of the common house- a centralized space designed for public use within the community

Live|Work at a residential scale

A thesis project studying space with multiple functions.  While it doesn't exactly pertain to our project, it is a really great analysis that reveals how a space might be treated within a Live|Work condition.
